Argentina Fight Back From 0-2 Down to Beat Egypt and Reach World Cup Quarter-Finals

Argentina produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the World Cup knockout stage, defeating Egypt 3-2 in the Round of 16 and booking their place in the quarter-finals.

The match, played in Atlanta, looked to be slipping away from the reigning world champions for most of the evening. By the 79th minute, Argentina were trailing 2-0 after goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko had put Egypt in a commanding position.

Argentina’s frustration was made worse by an early missed penalty from captain Lionel Messi, who failed to convert from the spot in the 21st minute. For a long stretch of the game, Egypt appeared close to a historic result.

But Argentina responded with a late surge. Cristian Romero started the comeback, before Messi made up for his earlier miss by scoring the equaliser. Enzo Fernández then completed the turnaround, sealing a dramatic 3-2 victory for the defending champions.

The result sends Argentina into the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the tie between Switzerland and Colombia.

For Argentina, the win was another reminder of their resilience on the biggest stage. Even after falling two goals behind, the reigning world champions found a way back and kept their title defence alive.
