Anderlecht and Gent take 1-0 leads into decisive European qualifiers

Two Belgian clubs will attempt to complete important European qualifying jobs on Thursday, 13 August. Anderlecht host PAOK in the UEFA Europa League, while KAA Gent welcome IFK Göteborg in the UEFA Conference League.

Both Belgian teams won their opening matches 1-0 away from home. However, neither tie is settled. With only one goal separating the sides, Anderlecht and Gent will need another disciplined performance to secure their places in the play-off round.

Anderlecht vs PAOK: a narrow lead and a sold-out Lotto Park

Anderlecht made a dream start to the first leg in Thessaloniki. Mihajlo Cvetković scored inside the opening minute, immediately putting the Belgian club in control of the tie. The young forward later found the net again, but his second effort was ruled out for offside.

PAOK controlled much of the possession and forced the visitors to defend for long periods. Nevertheless, the Greek side struggled to convert its territorial advantage into clear opportunities and recorded only two shots on target.

Goalkeeper Colin Coosemans and the Anderlecht defence protected the early lead, allowing the Brussels club to return to Belgium with a valuable 1-0 victory.

The second leg may follow a different pattern. PAOK must score to remain in the competition and will therefore be expected to take more risks. This could create counter-attacking opportunities for Anderlecht, but defending a one-goal advantage for the entire match would remain a dangerous strategy.

Confidence within Vítor Bruno’s team was strengthened by a 2-1 domestic victory over RAAL La Louvière. Anderlecht will also have the support of a sold-out Lotto Park for the decisive return match.

What happens if Anderlecht qualify?

If Anderlecht protect their aggregate lead, they will advance to the Europa League play-off round, where Kairat Almaty will be the next opponent.

Reaching the play-offs would guarantee Anderlecht a place in the league phase of a UEFA competition. A victory in the next round would send the club into the Europa League, while defeat would redirect the Belgian side to the Conference League.

Even elimination against PAOK would not immediately end Anderlecht’s European campaign. In that scenario, the club would move into the Conference League play-offs and face the winner of the tie between SK Brann and Apollon Limassol.

The return match is therefore important not only for Anderlecht’s Europa League ambitions but also for the level at which the club will compete during the European autumn.

Gent vs IFK Göteborg: the Buffaloes must finish the job
